Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it can eventually cause severe health issues like heart disease and stroke, which are the two leading causes of death in Americans. Because the heart works harder to pump blood to the body, high blood pressure contributes to the hardening of arteries, kidney failure and heart failure.

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, as it’s called “The Silent Killer”. Therefore, it is imperative to get your blood pressure measured. If you or your physician have noticed a higher blood pressure, things like smoking, being overweight, not exercising, excessive salt and alcohol intake, stress and more can play a role. Older age, genetics and a family history can also be a leading cause in high blood pressure.
Essential hypertension (also known as primary hypertension) is when a patient’s high blood pressure doesn’t have a known secondary cause. This is also the most common type of high blood pressure. Approximately 90-95% of adults with hypertension have essential hypertension.
Secondary Hypertension is when a direct cause for high blood pressure can be identified. Typically, things like kidney disease can cause this type of hypertension as the adrenal glands secrete excess amounts of the hormones that elevate blood pressure. Even some medications like birth control pills that contain estrogen play a role and constrict blood vessels.
Your healthcare team is key in managing your blood pressure and lowering your risk. In addition to your physician, pharmacists are valuable members in approaching treatments for hypertension, as they can guide you in diet changes, medication management and exercise. Given our pharmacists’ medication knowledge and patient counseling skills, it’s important to discuss with your physician and pharmacists which medications can be right for you.
